Expand a topic below for guidance on installing firmware, the on-node dashboard, wiring, and Wi‑Fi.
USB install & serial errors
- Open this site with HTTPS in Chrome or Edge on a laptop.
- Use a USB data cable. Close any serial monitor before installing.
- Logs & Console / Download logs in the installer may reset the board once when the serial port opens — that is normal on ESP32 USB; the node is not broken.
- Serial port is not readable/writable — On the install page, click Connection stuck? Reset, unplug USB for 5 seconds, plug in again.
- No port in the list — Different cable or USB port; on Windows install CP210x or CH340 drivers if no COM port appears.
- Install hangs — Hold BOOT on the DevKit while starting the install; release when progress starts.
- Erase device off = update (keeps Wi‑Fi, location, clock, and sky history). Erase device on = factory reset (wipes everything).
- The install page shows This installer: … with the firmware version from this portal — check it matches what your teacher expects.
After installing
- Until home Wi‑Fi is saved, the node runs an open setup network named
LUMINA-NOVA-xxxx(four characters are unique to your board). - On that network, open
http://192.168.4.1. Serial monitor at 115200 baud prints the setup AP name and dashboard IP. - On the node, open Settings to set location, date & time, and home Wi‑Fi.
- On home Wi‑Fi with internet, the clock usually syncs via NTP automatically.
Dashboard layout
- The home page shows sky readings, the 24-hour graph, night phases, moon, Device (info and location), and Connectivity.
- Latitude, longitude, and altitude appear on the Device card (set in Settings).
- There is no separate Storage & Memory card on the home page — history summary is on the Data page.
- Use Data and Settings at the bottom of the dashboard.
Clock, timezone & daylight saving (BST)
Choose your region under Settings → Timezone (for example United Kingdom (GMT / BST)). The node applies GMT in winter and BST in summer automatically when the clock is synced — you do not need to change the clock when daylight saving starts or ends.
- Prefer NTP on home Wi‑Fi (shown on the Connectivity card as the time source).
- If the clock is one hour wrong during BST, install firmware NOVA-BUILD-98+ or EDU-BUILD-37+ from this portal (update with Erase device off).
- Manual date & time in Settings is still available if the classroom has no internet.
Dashboard blank or unstyled
The installer includes dashboard files. Run Connect & Install Firmware again from the install page with Erase device off. If problems continue, factory reset once (Erase device on), then configure the node again.
Light sensor not detected
The node expects a TSL2591 sensor (I2C address 0x29). Other modules such as the TSL2561 are not supported.
- Power: 3.3 V and GND (not 5 V).
- Wiring: SDA → GPIO 21, SCL → GPIO 22 on a standard ESP32 DevKit.
- Check connections; shorter wires often help in the classroom.
- Serial output at 115200 baud may show an I2C scan — an empty scan usually means wiring or power.
Wi‑Fi problems
- Use 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi (ESP32 does not use 5 GHz‑only networks).
- Re-enter the password in Settings, or tick Forget saved Wi‑Fi to return to setup mode only.
- Prefer WPA2 (or WPA2/WPA3 mixed). WPA3‑only routers often fail.
- Cannot see
LUMINA-NOVA-xxxx— Power-cycle the board; at 115200 baud look for[WiFi] Setup AP LUMINA-NOVA-…. Install the latest firmware from this portal if the node never enters setup mode.
Sky readings not updating
The sensor is not being read. Check wiring and power in Light sensor not detected. The dashboard may still open but values stay empty until the sensor works.
Internet status on the node
Not detected is normal in classroom setup mode or without a router. On home Wi‑Fi, the node checks for internet access; if it never connects, ensure the network allows the device online. Dashboard icons and styles work offline — they are stored on the node, not loaded from the internet.
When your project enables it, the device may compare its firmware to the class install page manifest once after connecting and about once an hour. An Update available pill on the Device card means a newer build is on the install site — use USB install from that page (leave Erase device unchecked to keep settings and history).
Observation Data & 15-minute log
- Open Data from the dashboard for stored sky readings (one row per 15 minutes).
- Logging needs a valid date & time in Settings (or NTP on home Wi‑Fi). The first row appears after a full 15-minute window closes.
- The first row after setup may only cover part of that window until the node has run for a full quarter-hour.
- The table loads the newest rows first; summary cards fill in shortly after. Use Jump to Day for one calendar day, Load Older for earlier pages, or Download CSV for the full log.
- Update (Erase device off): Keeps Wi‑Fi, location, clock, and the 15-minute history on the node.
- Factory reset (Erase device on): Erases device storage, including history and settings, before installing fresh firmware.
API Info (for projects)
On the node, open Data → API Info for a list of /api/... JSON endpoints (sky, graph, connectivity, samples, CSV export). No password is required on the local network.
- Each JSON endpoint has a Test button that opens a small window with a live response from your node.
- Only one topic accordion stays open at a time to keep the page easy to read.
